The name Halifax is said to be a corruption of the Old English words for Holy and Face, part of a legend that the head of John the Baptist was buried here after his death. The legend is almost certainly medieval rather than ancient, although in the town it still shows a coat of arms still carrying an image of the saint.
Halifax gave its name to a bank, Halifax plc which started as a building society in the town. Now Halifax is a trading name of HBOS, as part of the Lloyds Banking Group. Halifax is part of a twin town with Aachen in Germany. The A58 has a stretch called Aachen Way; it has a plaque on the town-bound side of the road.
Built on the production of wool Halifax is a constant reminder of what it used to be in its hay day of times. It has so much to show people about its true heritage from cathedrals to a grade 11 listed town hall to contemporary shops and ancient buildings. It is also home to Eureka a fun children’s museum. There is truly something for everyone here.
